Chief: "[KAOS is threatening] to wipe out the city containing our finest intellectual minds and greatest leaders."

Trivia[]

  • This was the first episode directed by Don Adams.
  • When the Chief says a pair of agents in perfect synch are needed for the mission, Max nominates Huntley and Brinkley. Chet Huntley and David Brinkley had been the hosts of an evening news program running since 1956 (ending in 1970).

Reality Check[]

  • The title refers to the 1934 novel Appointment in Samarraby John O'Hara.
  • The episode also bears a passing resemblance to Sahara, a 1943 film starring Humphrey Bogart as a World War II tank commander who leads his men on a trek across the desert to rejoin their outfit. As well as the obligatory sandstorm, there are scenes of men drinking from canteens with water streaming down their chins (some of it getting in their mouths), diving for cover from sudden sniper fire, and, most intriguingly, a search for the entrance to an underground well, very similar to when Max is trying to find the missile control room after the tents have been moved. Get Smart guest stars J. Carrol Naish and Patrick O'Moore also appear.
